Four people died and eight others were injured after a fire broke out at a shophouse in Lorong 4 Geylang, early Saturday morning (Dec 6).
Neighbours said the unit was used as a dormitory for foreign workers from different countries.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the fire at Lorong 4 Geylang at about 1.40am.
The unit is believed to have been housing more people than allowed, and illegal partitions may have been added to create more rooms.
SCDF officers said the fire was located in the centre of the unit, and it was extinguished within 30 minutes.
Three people were found unconscious in one of the rooms. They were pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Nine others were sent to hospital, where one of them later died.
The Migrant Workers Centre said it will assist the next-of-kin of those who died, as well as the injured workers.
