There are almost 500 retailers at Sim Lim Square, but around 10 black sheep among these, said Sim Lim Square's Chairman Raymond Chua at a press conference on Friday (Nov 7).

That means the errant retailers - some of whom have attracted a barrage of bad press over the past week - form less than 2 per cent of the total retailers, said the mall's management.

Sim Lim Square's Vice-chairman Kwek Theng Swee added that they had sought legal advice to see if they can sue these black sheep, but cannot proceed as the by-laws do not give them the right to do so.

"We are very disappointed that in Singapore - such a lawful place - these black sheep exist and we are unable to get rid of them. With recent events, we are taking it as a chance to start anew. If the Government can help us with these things, we can be a shopping paradise," Mr Kwek said.

The mall's management emphasised that the authorities need to intervene in order to bring the errant retailers to justice.

They added that Cyber Maestro, a retailer with three complaints filed against it according to CASE's latest statistics, recently sent a letter to the management demanding an apology and potentially S$30,000 in damages as the mall's security guard had assisted a customer in calling the police to lodge a report against it.

Ultimately, the management wants to educate black sheep retailers to change their ways.

“We want to remind blacklisted shops that life is not great for them - they have been insulted by people even when buying a packet of rice,” said Mr Kwek.
