Barcelona forward Lionel Messi equalled the Champions League scoring record of 71 goals when he struck for the second time in the 76th minute of his side's 2-0 win over Ajax.

The Argentina four-time world player of the year matched the record set by former Real Madrid and Schalke 04 striker Raul.

Messi moved within one goal of the record when he headed home Marc Bartra's hooked cross after 36 minutes in the Amsterdam Arena to draw level on 70 goals with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

He matched Raul with 14 minutes remaining, tapping home after exchanging a neat one-two with Pedro.

The win also sealed the Spanish side's progress in the event.

Elsewhere, Manchester City's hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage were dealt a severe blow after Seydou Doumbia's brace and two red cards subjected them to a humiliating 2-1 defeat by CSKA Moscow at home.

Chelsea stretched their unbeaten start to the season to a club record-equalling 16 games with a 1-1 draw against Maribor.

Bayern Munich eased past AS Roma 2-0 with goals from Franck Ribery and Mario Goetze to advance to the knockout stage as Group E winners with two games to spare.

Undefeated in the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup this season, Bayern also secured top spot with two games left to play, sitting on maximum 12 points.

Results:

Maribor 1-1 Chelsea
Sporting 4-2 Schalke 04
Athletic Club 0-2 Porto
Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 BATE Borisov
Ajax 0-2 Barcelona
PSG 1-0 APOEL Nicosia
Bayern Munich 2-0 AS Roma
Manchester City 1-2 CSKA Moscow
