Four medallists who performed well at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games received sports scholarships from the NTUC FairPrice Foundation on Friday (Oct 31), the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) announced in a media release.
Team Singapore medallists Bernie Chin, Samantha Yom, Martina Lindsay Veloso and Teh Xiu Yi received the scholarships from NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Ltd Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Kian Chew.
Mr Chin and Ms Yom, who are both sailors, each received scholarships amounting to S$50,000. They were the first Singaporeans to win gold at the Summer Youth Olympic Games when they won a gold medal each in the Byte CII men’s and women’s events respectively, according to the release.
Ms Veloso, who is a shooter, received a scholarship valued at S$25,000 for winning a silver medal in the 10m Air Rifle Women's event. Ms Teh, whose partnership with Egyptian Mohamed Ahmed earned her a silver medal in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed International Team event, received S$20,000 in scholarship, the SNOC said.
Eighteen athletes represented Team Singapore in eight sports at the second Summer Youth Olympic Games from Aug 16 to 28 this year and returned with two gold and two silver medals.
