11 people have been arrested for drink-driving in an island-wide operation conducted early Tuesday morning (Nov 11).
A total of 69 drivers were stopped and tested for alcohol levels at various road blocks set up across Singapore. 11 men, aged between 28 and 44, failed a test.
One person had two times the prescribed legal limit of alcohol, with a Breath Evidential Analyser (BEA) test result of 68 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
Those convicted of drink-driving will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months. They will lose their driving licences and will have to retake and pass the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licences again.
In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000 and can have their driving licences disqualified for a period of 12 to 48 months, depending on their BEA test results.
Repeat offenders can be fined up to S$30,000 and jailed for up to three years. They also face up to six strokes of the cane, if they cause death or serious injury from drink-driving.
