Three men aged between 37 and 44 were arrested on Tuesday (Nov 25) for allegedly attempting to cheat in a scam involving fake gold ingots.
Police received a report on Tuesday afternoon from a complainant who had been approached by two men claiming to have found gold ingots while excavating an unknown site in Singapore.
The two men allegedly offered to sell the gold ingots at an attractive price. In addition, they allegedly produced a document written in Chinese resembling an old will, as well as a gold ingot to allow the complainant to verify its authenticity at a goldsmith.
After price negotiations, the suspects gave the complainant time to consider the offer. The complainant then alerted the police after determining the deal was too good to be true.
Police managed to detain and arrest both suspects in an ambush. After further investigations, police also arrested another accomplice and seized other items, including more than 200 small gold-coloured ingots, a piece of paper with Chinese characters written on it and six yellow gold-coloured mini Buddha statues.
Investigations are ongoing. The suspects will be charged in court on Thursday. If found guilty, they may be jailed up to 10 years and fined.
