Sixteen cases of pickpocketing and theft along Orchard Road were reported between Oct 26 and Nov 16, the police said on Thursday (Nov 27).

All 16 cases occurred between 12pm and 6pm, when victims either had their valuable items picked while walking in crowded areas or had left their belongings unattended.

With the festive season around the corner, the police are reminding the public to remain vigilant at all times, especially in crowded places. They also issued the following crime prevention advisory:

  1. Avoid exposing cash, valuables or jewellery in public areas as this might draw unnecessary attention;
  2. Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket. Ensure that your bag is properly secured at all times. Cross-sling it in front or clasp it firmly while shopping or walking;
  3. Never leave your valuables unattended on trolleys or strollers while shopping. Unattended valuables pose easy targets to would-be culprits;
  4. While having meals, never use valuables such as handphones to reserve seats. Arrange for someone to look after your valuables while ordering food;
  5. Do not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion, bumping into you or accidentally spilling something onto you. Check your valuables immediately if this happens;
  6. Do not put excessive gold jewellery on your children as they are easy targets for potential criminals.
