NASA's unmanned Antares rocket exploded six seconds into launch at Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on Tuesday afternoon.
The rocket was carrying 5,000 pounds of NASA cargo aboard the company's Cygnus spacecraft from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at Wallops. The rocket was scheduled to take supplies to the International Space Station.
"There has been a vehicle anomaly," Orbital Sciences, the contractor supplying the rocket, wrote on its Twitter feed.
The company added that no one was believed to be hurt and the damage appeared to be limited to the facilities.
The Cygnus cargo ship was loaded with gear for the six people living on the space station. It was the fourth Cygnus bound for the orbiting lab; the first flew just over a year ago.
The launch was initially scheduled on Monday, but delayed when a 26-foot-long sailboard entered into the 1,400 square mile hazard zone where the rocket was scheduled for liftoff.
