A bursary for ex-inmates, in the name of veteran criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan, was launched on Tuesday (Oct 28). It provides financial support for ex-convicts who wish to further their studies, allowing them a second chance to realise their dreams.
Law Minister K Shanmugam said it is fitting that the bursary is named after Mr Subhas, as he always displays compassion and faith in reforming those who have had brushes with the law.
The bursary will be administered by the Yellow Ribbon Fund Secretariat. Lawyers have pledged S$100,000 to kickstart the fund.
The launch of the bursary was also a sentimental tribute to Mr Subhas, who has been struggling with multiple health issues. Minister Shanmugam said despite Mr Subhas’ health, his commitment to practise law demonstrates his “passion and fortitude”.
“Many lesser men would have given up. I visited him at his home earlier this year and was concerned to see him quite run down, he could hardly walk. So I think it's good to see him much better now,” Mr Shanmugam said.
Mr Subhas said this this project is close to his heart as he has always wanted to do something for former detainees.
"I am a firm believer in giving people a second chance and I think this fund will help to give those who are deserving a second chance,” he said.
