Enner Valencia reproduced his World Cup flair to rescue a point in a game of impressive debut goals.
Sam Allardyce saw his team come from behind twice, and Valencia show he may inject some much needed excitement into the Hammers side.
But Hull's new striker Abel Hernandez also notched his own fine goal, as Steve Bruce's side contributed to a bright encounter.
Record buy Hernandez gave an exciting taster of his talents, with a goal, and a lively show, on his debut.
Deadline day gave Steve Bruce's side a feel good factor with four new signings including £10million striker Hernandez who got his Hull career off to a flier.
Bruce bought Hernandez for his prolific goal record in Serie B last season - 14 in 28 games for Palermo.
His opener on 39 minutes was a power header as he out-jumped the Hammers' centre backs to nod home Ahmed Elmohamady's cross.
Allardyce's big buy Valencia conjured a flash of brilliance with a spectacular goal to level the match after 50 minutes.
The Hammers are often criticised for their style, but £12million summer recruit Valencia turned up with his World Cup scoring boots on.
The Ecuador international scored three times in Brazil before Allardyce bought the 24 year old from Pachuca, to see moments like his top corner thunderbolt, as he lurked on the edge of the box.
Hull pushed on after the break to get the win and were soon in front again when another debutant Mo Diame netted.
The former West Ham star seized a poor throw-in from Aaron Creswell and romped towards goal with James Tomkins backing off.
Diame took the room on offer to smash home and give Bruce's men sight of victory.
However the game was far from over as West Ham fought back for a second time. Stewart Downing played in Diafra Sakho who screwed a shot at goal.
Hull keeper Allan McGregor let the effort slide through his body and the final touch went to Curtis Davies for an own goal.
Hernandez came close to putting Hull two up in the first half when he fired onto the bar from 25 yards. Nikica Jelevic headed home the rebound but was offside.
Hull owner Assem Allam announcment he was selling up because of the row over renaming the club Hull Tiger appears to have caused friction on the home terraces.
The North Stand of the KC Stadium singing "City till I die", only to be booed by another parts of the crowd.
