Hong Kong could not manage more than a spirited defence on Wednesday evening (Sep 10), when they faced defending champions and top seed Singapore in the Mission Foods Asian Netball Championships at the Singapore Sports Hub's OCBC Arena.

While Hong Kong breezed past India, Vietnam and Japan to seal a spot for themselves in the semi-finals, the world-ranked 25th visitors were facing their toughest match to date.

Despite an aggressive show in the first quarter, Hong Kong quickly whittled down in the second. By the end of halftime, Singapore was leading comfortably with a score of 28-17.

Showing no mercy, Singapore shifted into attack, courtesy of Ms Charmaine Soh and Ms Chen Huifen. The match ended with a final score of 63-28.

Singapore will face India in their final group match on Thursday.

Ms Lin Qingyi, captain of the Singapore netball team, said: "Hong Kong put in a really strong challenge against us in the first quarter. It took a few more passes before we got the ball in to the shooters. It is going to be a tough weekend, so one game at a time - take on India first and we will see how we progress through to the weekend."
