Restaurants, a gym and a supermarket which are open to the public are among the amenities the Government is considering for a one-stop centre serving people with disabilities, as part of efforts to create an environment to enable this group to interact with society at large.

The centre at Redhill, which will house facilities for people with disabilities to seek employment and undergo training, is set to open in the second half of next year. The 30,000sqm centre, to be managed by SG Enable, was officially launched yesterday.

The centre will provide information and referral services, grants and support to people with disabilities and their caregivers. A career centre will provide vocational assessment, job placement and support services to people with disabilities and potential employers.

Ideas to include amenities such as restaurants are under consideration, but details have not been confirmed as the tender for development proposals has yet to be awarded.

As of today, S$2.5 million has been raised for the project under the Care & Share programme by Community Chest, with significant donations from SingTel and Keppel.

SG Enable is collaborating with at least 10 organisations — including voluntary welfare organisations such as the Autism Resource Centre and private partners like SingTel — to provide a well-rounded space.
