Plans are afoot to make job openings more accessible to locals after employers and job seekers expressed encouraging demand for a new national database aimed at helping Singaporeans obtain a fair crack at employment opportunities.
Although the new portal, www.jobsbank.gov.sg, run by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), was officially launched only yesterday, some 4,300 employers have registered as users following a trial version that went “live” two months ago, offering more than 16,000 vacancies.
About 12,900 individuals have also signed up, with more than one-third of them making 12,100 job applications.
And the Government now seeks to partner with private job portals by next year, with the possibility of sharing job postings in the pipeline.
The new job database will support the Fair Consideration Framework, which will kick off next month.
Under the framework, employers with at least 25 staff members have to list vacancies on the Jobs Bank portal for at least 14 days before they can submit Employment Pass applications for potential foreign hires.
This is to address growing complaints that some sectors are hiring a large number of foreigners.
Of the more than 16,000 openings, half are targeted at professionals, managers and executives.
Through the website, Singaporeans can apply for jobs directly with employers through their SingPass account. Employers can post job vacancies for free and scour the portal’s database for potential candidates.
