Gary Lineker has urged more players to move abroad to help improve the England team.
Lineker will go down as one of English football’s most successful exports after his spell at Barcelona when there was a rich vein of talent moving abroad in the 1980s.
Former England stars Glenn Hoddle, Ray Wilkins, Des Walker and Mark Hateley also all played abroad but now the steady stream has dried up.
Welshman Gareth Bale went to Real Madrid last summer for a world record £85million but none of the current England squad look likely to leave the Premier League any time soon.
England boss Roy Hodgson has also voiced his desire for players to further their careers abroad and Lineker believes it helps develop them as players and as characters.
He said: “In my day, far more players went abroad... I think it can help you tactically, help your football intelligence and improve you as a footballer. The problem is we’re not producing enough.... We need to get the conveyor belt going. It’s all about the talent, the production line.”
