Colombia pull off awesome team dance celebration
Some teams spend their time between World Cup games on the Xbox or around the pool, but Colombia have clearly been working with a choreographer to get their goal celebration nailed.
And it certainly paid off against the Ivory Coast this evening following goals from both James Rodriguez and Juan Quintero.
Pretty much the whole team – subs included – got in on the act to pull off the frankly epic celebration, as they went in front through a Rodriguez header before a quick counter attack allowed Quintero to double their lead.
But they may want to ditch the dancing and spend a bit more time working on defending, having let Gervinho – of all people – go on a mazy dribble and fire home to halve the deficit with 15 minutes remaining.
Fortunately for Colombia, they live to dance another day, holding on for a 2-1 victory which all but sees them through to the last 16.
Luis Suarez Stars as Uruguay Beat England
Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has spent the past season terrorizing English club defenses. Today, in Sao Paulo, he struck twice on the international stage to defeat England, 2-1, in a Group D clash.
Before the game, the question was whether Suarez was 100 percent fit. It took 39 minutes to get an answer. Edinson Cavani floated a beautiful cross that was just too high for England defender Phil Jagielka. Suarez was lurking just behind to place a low header past keeper Joe Hart.
England equalized in the 75th minute, when Wayne Rooney tapped in Glen Johnson’s cross from close range.
However, it was Uruguay and Suarez who took all three points when Fernando Muslera’s booming clearance was knocked on by the colliding figures of Cavani and Steven Gerrard.
The loose ball fell kindly for Suarez who raced in alone on goal and lashed a shot past a helpless Hart.
Uruguay now has 3 points in Group D, along with Costa Rica and Italy, who face off tomorrow in their second game.
Uruguay will face the Italians in the final group game on Tuesday in Natal. England, now all but mathematically eliminated, will see out its campaign against Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte.
Japan wastes numerous chances, play to scoreless draw with Greece
When Greece's Kostas Katsouranis was sent off late in the first half, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Japan would finally get the breakthrough goal they'd been in search of the entire first half.
Instead, they just kept burning through chances, and Greece somehow kept them at bay for a 0-0 tie.
The Japan chances were plentiful and, sometimes, easy. Credit Greece, of course, who fought like hell with only 10 men for the majority of the game. They, too, had a couple chances wasted.
The result Thursday will not sit well with Japan. It's a game they should have won.
