US supports Singapore's proposal for regional disaster relief centre

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has supported Singapore's proposal to set up a Regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Coordination Centre, at the Changi Naval Base.

This is expected to strengthen humanitarian and disaster relief efforts in the region.

Secretary Hagel met with Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen on the sidelines of this year's Shangri-La Dialogue on Friday.

In an earlier plenary session, he had called on ASEAN members to consider Singapore's offer to use Changi Naval Base as another regional command and control hub.
