Soccer Transfers Roundup

Tottenham want Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid to solve defensive woes
Spurs are chasing Toby Alderweireld of Atletico Madrid, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.

The Belgium international is anxious to move away from the Champions League finalists in search of regular first-team football.

And the defender has been recommended to Mauricio Pochettino by his scouts as Tottenham’s new boss seeks to revamp his squad.

Alderweireld, 25, can be used at either right-back or as a centre-half, but it is in the middle of Spurs’ defence where he has been earmarked to play.

However, any deal could hinge on where highly-rated Atletico centre-half Miranda ends up this summer.

Newcastle plot Curtis Davies transfer from Hull
Newcastle have joined the chase for Hull skipper Curtis Davies.

The centre-back is in demand, with Sunderland and Everton both ready to pay £8million to prise him out of the Yorkshire club.

But Toon chief Alan Pardew plans to tempt the Tigers with a player-plus-cash offer for the former Luton, West Brom and Aston Villa defender.

Pardew is willing to pay City £4m and throw in £4m-rated Steven Taylor as a ready-made replacement for Davies.

Pardew sees Davies, whose stunning form for Hull last term came close to earning him an England call-up, as the perfect partner for skipper Fabricio Coloccini at the heart of Newcastle’s rearguard.

Man United confident on Thomas Muller transfer
Determined to hit the ground running, Louis van Gaal will be in constant contact with Manchester United throughout the World Cup and is in regular contact with vice-chairman Ed Woodward about how transfer targets are progressing.

A German magazine interview published this weekend has confirmed United’s belief that they can prise attacking midfielder Thomas Muller out of Bayern Munich this summer. He has been lined up for a £25million deal.

It was Van Gaal who turned the young Muller into a star player during their days together at Bayern.

And the Netherlands' boss has noted that Muller only played the full 90 minutes in 24 of his 51 appearances last season. Yet he still contributed 26 goals.

In fact, when he was Bayern boss and the subject of selecting Muller was on the agenda, Van Gaal said: “With me, Muller will always play.’’

Chelsea line up Didier Drogba transfer 'home'
Didier Drogba is set to return to Chelsea this summer.

The 36-year-old striker is out of contract at Galatasaray, and the Blues boss Jose Mourinho has never disguised his hopes of re-signing the powerful Ivory Coast star.

And the reunion could arrive soon after Drogba completes his World Cup duties in Brazil.

Drogba was signed by Chelsea in 2004 for £24million from Marseille and in seven years at the west London club, he scored 157 goals in 341 appearances.

His last kick for Chelsea was to score the crucial penalty in the shoot-out against Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League Final.

The Ivory Coast international then moved to China and, after a contract dispute, on to Galatasaray.

Mourinho wants him back, initially as a player, but there could be a coaching role for Drogba in the future.

Liverpool poised to switch transfer interest from Adam Lallana to Lazar Markovic
Liverpool are ready to drop their bid to sign England World Cup star Adam Lallana - and set their sights on Lazar Markovic.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers is worried that Southampton are pricing attacking midfielder Lallana out of a move to Merseyside.

The Anfield club only want to pay just over £20million for Lallana, but the Saints are looking for more than that because they have to give his former club Bournemouth a slice of the profit.

Rodgers is fretting about the possibility of Markovic, his main alternative to Lallana, being sold by Benfica while he is waiting.

Markovic, 20, was Liverpool's original target for their left-wing slot at the end of the season, but the Lisbon club priced him at £30m then.

However, heavy hints are coming from the Portuguese giants that £25m could now be enough to secure a deal.

Queens Park Rangers open transfer talks with Bafetimbi Gomis
QPR boss Harry Redknapp is in talks with French striker Bafetimbi Gomis about joining on a £70,000-a-week deal.

The Lyon target-man is available as a free agent after letting his deal at the French club run down and he is keen on a move to the Premier League.

Newly-promoted Rangers plan to blow away their rivals for his signature away with a whopper of a contract offer.

Diego Costa and Romelu Lukaku going opposite directions
Romelu Lukaku has had TWO offers from Spain, as it appears there is no way back for him at Chelsea.

Atletico Madrid have asked for Belgium international striker Lukaku on a season-long loan while their striker Diego Costa prepares to make his £32million switch to Stamford Bridge after completing his medical.

The Blues also want Atletico's full-back Filipe Luiz, and the Spanish champions will push for Lukaku to be part of any deal.

However, Valencia have also come in and are prepared to pay around £18m for the powerful centre-forward.

Lukaku was farmed out on loan to Everton last season after fearing he would not get a chance under manager Jose Mourinho having spent the previous season on loan at West Brom.

He could be even further down the pecking order with the imminent arrival of Costa, whose move had been held up by a thigh injury.

Real Madrid in Luis Suarez transfer chase
Real Madrid have begun attempts to lure Luis Suarez away from Liverpool and make him their next Galactico.

Madrid-based newspaper Marca - a well-known mouthpiece for the Spanish giants - claims president Florentino Perez has made striker Suarez his number one summer transfer target.

Perez is said to have discussed the Uruguay international during a meeting in a Madrid restaurant with manager Carlo Ancelotti and director general Jose Angel Sanchez.

Ancelotti backs Perez's planned pursuit of Suarez, who top scored for the Anfield giants with 31 goals last season - but not at the expense of selling Karim Benzema, as he wants to keep the France international hitman.

Although Suarez has said repeatedly that he is happy at Liverpool and signed a new £250,000-a-week deal in January, Real believe they can tempt him.

They are encouraged by claims from his lawyer, Alejandro Balbi, that the 27-year-old would find it hard to resist a big offer from the new European champions.

Arsenal eye Calum Chambers transfer from Southampton
Arsenal will make a move for Southampton teenager Calum Chambers after scouting him twice for England Under-19s, write Neil Moxley and Tom Hopkinson in the Sunday People.

The Londoners have monitored the right-back since he broke into the Saints' first team on the opening day of the last campaign in a win at West Brom.

And now they are primed to pounce to secure his services after sending representatives to watch him during recent Euro Championship qualifiers against Scotland and Ukraine.

Chambers, 19, has emerged as a leading candidate to take over from Bacary Sagna, who has opted to join Manchester City on a Bosman.

He signed a four-year deal last summer so the fee will be substantial but not in the same league as the £27million being paid by Manchester United for Luke Shaw.

Arsene Wenger views Chambers as quality competition for Carl Jenkinson.

Redknapp eye Defoe, Ferdinand and Lampard for QPR in apparent reunion
Jermain Defoe will return to the Premier League next season – joining up once more with Harry Redknapp at QPR, writes Tom Hopkinson in the Sunday People.

The Toronto FC striker will arrive on loan as part of a plan by the Hoops boss to work once more with a trio of his former West Ham players.

But Sunday People Sport understands that Redknapp’s efforts to be reunited with Rio Ferdinand have hit a snag after QPR owner Tony Fernandes blocked the move.

And an offer to Frank Lampard will remain on the table until after the World Cup when the Chelsea legend will take his pick from over 20 suitors.

Lampard could link up with the newly-promoted west Londoners for six months before joining MLS side New York City.

Defoe will arrive in January, at the end of season in the MLS – where he has netted six times in seven games for Toronto.

Sunderland's Adam Johnson poised for Everton transfer on a season-long loan
Everton will take Adam Johnson from Sunderland – but only on a season’s loan, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.

Roberto Martinez is on the lookout for a winger and the Black Cats are prepared to offload the 26-year-old England international.

However, the Toffees are unwilling to pay a fee to take the former Manchester City playmaker permanently.

But they are prepared to exercise the option of a temporary move with Martinez having enjoyed success in the loan market last season after capturing both Gareth Barry and Romelu Lukaku just before the window slammed shut.
