Oohs and aahs rippled through the more than 10,000-strong crowd gathered at the S$1.33 billion Singapore Sports Hub as fireworks lit up the sky at Kallang yesterday.

To mark one year before the 28th SEA Games are held in June 5 to 16 next year, event organisers, the Singapore South-east Asian Games Organising Committee (SINGSOC) also had 15 million reasons to celebrate.

SingTel has signed on as Official Multimedia Partner with to the tune of S$15 million. This is the biggest sponsorship deal SINGSOC has signed to date, following Tuesday’s announcement of S$5 million deal from NTUC FairPrice and FairPrice Foundation.

More than 7,000 athletes from 11 South-east Asian countries will compete across 36 sports next year, with Team Singapore aiming to better its record of 50 gold medals from the 1993 SEA Games held here.

The coming year will see a ramping up of community activities to promote the SEA Games, including programmes for primary, secondary and tertiary students, while a final countdown event will be held 50 days before the Games.

Innovative ideas on how to celebrate SG50 and SEA Games 2015 will be funded by up to 90 per cent of the project cost, with the cap pegged at S$50,000 per project.
