Liverpool have placed a bid of £9.75million for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can, triggering the release cause in his contract.

The Reds are now free to open talks with the Germany Under-21 international, who is highly rated by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

Emre Can joined Bayer Leverkusen from Bayern Munich last summer, and as part of the sale, the German champions have a recall option on the 20-year-old.

But Liverpool are hoping to agree personal terms with Can and push through a deal within the next week.

A versatile utility player, Can filled in at left-back, defensive-midfield, right-midfield, left-midfield, central-midfield and attacking-midfield for Bayer in the 2013/14 campaign.
