National broadcaster MediaCorp has been fined S$6,300 by the Media Development Authority (MDA) for comments made on air in March by one of its radio deejays about a visually-impaired woman.

The offending remarks were made during Class 95FM’s Morning Express programme on March 20, when radio deejay Joe Augustin used a derogatory term — “a**hole” — to refer to the woman, after she complained on Facebook about being refused service at a fast-food outlet. Mr Augustin used the same term again in the following day’s programme.

Mr Augustin acknowledged that he may have crossed some lines.

He said: “In trying to hold up a mirror to society and keeping our programme edgy, I feel I may have crossed the very same lines I’ve called out others on for crossing. And so, to those whom I have offended by my choice of words on this occasion, I sincerely apologise. And I promise you that I will do better in the future.”
