The famous Lau Pa Sat food court in the central business district is set to reopen at the end of June, after a series of delays in its renovation schedule.

The S$4-million project is the first major facelift of Lau Pa Sat in over seventeen years, since the Kopitiam group took over.

But some tenants are unhappy to see the opening dates pushed back as staff had to be paid for more months of closure.

They have asked to be compensated by having the first two months of their rent waived when the food court reopens.

Kopitiam said tenants were initially offered a temporary stall at another location and at a lower rent but none took it up.

It added that the delays are due to various agencies having to inspect the site to ensure it keeps its cultural heritage.

The renovations will also see the number of stalls scaled down from over 80 to 68. Kopitiam said this is to create more seats for patrons and for some stall holders to enjoy larger stall areas.
