Defending S.League champions Tampines Rovers kicked off the 2014 season with a 1-0 win over 2013 Singapore Cup winners Home United on Friday in the Charity Shield tie at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Home United went on the offensive from the start and had the best chance to go ahead but striker Qiu Li shot directly at Tampines Rovers custodian Hyrulnizam Juma'at.

The first half ended goalless as both teams' defences gave little away.

The deadlock was broken just two minutes into the second half after some great individual skill from Tampines Rovers star signing Miljan Mrdakovic.

The Serbian striker deftly controlled a cross from Roberto Martinez and calmly placed his shot past Home United goalkeeper Shahril Jantan to give Tampines Rovers the lead.

Home United ended the match with 10 men after Qiu Li was sent off eight minutes from the end for kicking Tampines Rovers substitute Anaz Hadee.

Mrdakovic’s goal was enough for Tampines to claim victory and pick up all three points.
