We thank Mr Jeremy Aw for his letter ("Time for local roaming services"; Feb 11).

The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) is currently studying the feasibility of implementing some form of national roaming between the three mobile operators.

National roaming among all three players could mean substantial investment by the mobile operators to significantly expand their network capacities, to handle any additional traffic from subscribers of affected networks during service disruptions, without affecting their own end users.

The complexity and costliness of such an option have to be carefully considered alongside the potential benefits.

Regardless of whether national roaming is adopted, the IDA requires operators to place utmost importance on ensuring that their network infrastructure remains resilient to service disruptions, and to plan for contingencies with robust business continuity plans.
