He was part of a group of 10 police officers manning a line near Hampshire Road when he saw some rioters flip a police car onto its side.
One of the men threw a piece of cloth into the car, along with something else.
The car soon started burning.
"I saw (the burning car) and I got angry," Staff Sergeant Azmi Mohammed Hamzah told the Committee of Inquiry on day six of the Little India riot hearings.
SSgt Azmi had taken a few steps towards the rioters when his police commander stopped him by tapping him on the back.
His commander was worried the rioters might get further agitated, or that SSgt Azmi would get attacked by the mob.
