Police said it received nine reports of theft involving the slitting of bags along Orchard Road on Christmas Eve.
The cases occurred between 7pm on 24 December and 2.30am on 25 December.
All the cases happened when the victims were walking in crowded areas.
Police said the culprit or culprits are believed to have used a sharp object to slit open the bags and remove valuables, which include wallets and mobile phones.
In view of similar crowds expected on New Year's eve, Police urge the public to remain vigilant at all times, especially in crowded places.
The public is advised to adopt crime prevention measures against theft, such as:
- Be wary of suspicious persons or people following you;
- Do not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion or accidentally bumping/spilling something onto you;
- Keep a close watch on your belongings at all times and do not leave them unattended;
- Clutch your bag/handbag in front of you and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times; and
- Avoid carrying excessive cash, valuables or jewellery.
