Small bus companies that have not installed seat belts in their vehicles are rushing to do so by the end of the year, ahead of a December 31 deadline by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

LTA had sent out a reminder to bus companies in November 2013 to get their buses retrofitted with seat belts by the end of this year.

Workshops that are carrying out the retrofitting are also working longer hours to meet the increased demand.
Cynthia Tan, a workshop employee at Aim Heng Car Service, said: "We are working six days a week, from 9am to 6pm. But to cater to the needs of the vehicles coming in for appointment purposes, we are extending our working hours by another two to three hours, to about 8pm or 9pm."
