Amid much public discussion on taxi fleets and fares, there should be more focus on the drivers' competence and attitudes.
My husband and I are frequent taxi users, and we have noticed a lack of professionalism in a fair number of cabbies.
Their dangerous driving habits include speeding, tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic without signalling, and running red lights.
Then, there are those who do not know famous landmarks and roads. One driver did not know where Shenton Way was. Another had not heard of Ion Orchard, or Orchard Road, for that matter.
Some bear negative attitudes towards passengers and other road users.
Once, when my husband was in a taxi, the driver missed a turning. He then attempted to reverse the vehicle on the expressway. My husband yelled at him not to do so, but was treated to a rude outburst.
I have also encountered a driver who would honk at anyone who moved off or drove too slowly.
Are taxi companies and the Land Transport Authority issuing licences too easily? It is time to relook the training and testing of taxi drivers.
For a start, bring back the indicators that would chime whenever the driving speed exceeds the legal limit.
