May Ooi, former Olympian and now mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter has won her first competitive fight and recounts her experience in the MMA scene.
Her maiden competitive MMA victory came at the age of 37 in the Rebel Fighting Championship, after her fight against Amy Adam from Australia who already had 3 pro fights under her belt.
However, this is not the first time she has been in the spotlight: May Ooi was a former Olympic swimmer and a multiple gold medalist in the SEA Games. She was also crowned Sportsgirl of The Year in 1989.
In an interview by The Fight Scene, she revealed that she nearly broke a contestant’s arm with an armbar while wearing boxing gloves. At that time, she had only trained for competitive MMA for a month.
When asked about the local women's MMA scene, she feels that there isn’t a proper foundation to encourage girls to take up MMA. However, she is sure to be an inspiration and motivation for future talents to step up into the arena.
