Joshuel Pravin Vinson was nominated as one of his battalion's best soldiers during his basic military training.

He was shortlisted for the Special Operations Force selection trial and awarded the Battalion Best National Serviceman of the Year.

But all that came to naught after the 23-year-old was yesterday sentenced to six months' jail for an unlawful assembly whose objective was to hurt others.

He is the first of 18 people to be charged and sentenced.

They had gathered - armed with parangs and poles - in June at a block at Yishun St 11, where alleged Pak Leong Gang leader Mahaithiran Muhukumal lived, after a confrontation with the KCOW gang.
