I am saddened to learn that a cyclist was hit by a taxi while crossing a junction ("Cyclist in critical state after being hit by taxi"; last Thursday).

Cyclists are supposed to dismount and push their bicycles across traffic junctions. They must never assume that they have the right of way, and must keep a lookout for other road users.

My husband and I see more cyclists on the road these days. Sometimes, they do not switch on their lights at night or on overcast days, and most tend not to wear bright clothing.

A few times, my husband did not know that a cyclist was next to his car until its proximity sensor beeped.

These cyclists pose a hazard to themselves and other road users.
