A cabby who rear-ended a motorcycle and then dragged its rider under his taxi claimed that he thought he had gone over a bump in the road.

Ng Chin Huat, 63, drove off, leaving motorcyclist Hussain Abdullah Bagarib to die of multiple injuries.

Ng, now unemployed, was jailed for six weeks yesterday for the fatal hit-and-run incident. He was also banned from driving for five years, reported The Straits Times. Ng pleaded guilty to causing death by a negligent act, failing to stop and not rendering assistance after an accident.

The cabby had been driving without a passenger along East Coast Parkway towards Changi Airport at 11.45pm on May 20, 2011, when Mr Hussain came onto the expressway along the slip road from Siglap Link.

The collision sent the motorcycle crashing into the guard rail.

Mr Hussain, 60, a crane operator, was flung off his motorcycle. The taxi ran over him and he was dragged along.

A passenger in a passing car called the police and gave them the taxi's licence plate number. They called the Smart Taxis company, which told Ng to stay put at a petrol station in Upper East Coast Road and wait for the police to arrive.
