Senior Cadet Lieutenant (SCLT) Mohammed Aidil bin Mohammed Zainal has been in the National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC) since 2006.
As an Advisor to Kent Ridge Secondary school’s NCDCC Unit, he oversees the development of his young charges.
He traces his motivation to be a fire fighter to the day when he witnessed his grandmother suffer a heart attack at home. He was a young boy then.
“I was shocked at that time and felt scared,” said the 20-year-old.
Thankfully, paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived and rescued his grandmother.
“When I saw those paramedics wearing the blue SCDF uniform, I mistook them as fire fighters. That’s why I told myself at that point of time that I wanted to be a fire fighter and save lives just like them,” chuckled SCLT Aidil.
His appreciation for SCDF officers grew as he witnessed them years later as a National Civil Defence Cadet Corp (NCDCC) Cadet in Evergreen Secondary School’s NCDCC Unit.
“I remember going straight to the NCDCC booth in Secondary One to sign up. I did not care about the other clubs or uniform groups. All I knew was that I wanted to join NCDCC,” shared SCLT Aidil.
Part of his journey involved learning skills such as first aid and fire fighting; skills which helped him understand the difficulties that SCDF fire fighters face on the job.
“I realised that being a fire fighter was such a noble job! They protect lives and properties even when people may not see their contributions,” said SCLT Aidil.
