A British tourist died in Malaysia when she was struck by a passing boat’s propeller in a diving accident off a group of popular resort islands in the South China Sea, police said Tuesday.

Madeline Jayne, 25, suffered serious injuries to her lower limbs and torso in the accident early Monday off the Perhentian islands and died en route to hospital, news reports and police said.

The Perhentians are a sprinkling of idyllic islets off northeastern Malaysia popular with tourists due to their beautiful waters and coral reefs.

Terengganu state police chief Jamshah Mustafa said police were investigating the circumstances of the accident.

“From our initial findings, the incident happened in an area which is off-limits to swimmers,” he said.

Jayne’s Australian friend Simon Rogers, 22, was also hurt in the mishap but survived, Malaysia’s official Bernama news agency reported.
