A Facebook page called “CHOPE FOOD for the NEEDY - 'Suspended Food Revolution' to Pay It Forward” is asking Singaporeans to “pre-pay” hawkers so that their food stalls may distribute meals to “needy folk”.

Founded by Singaporean Michelle Tan, the initiative gathered over 2,000 “likes” since its creation on Monday. Facebook posts on the page as of Wednesday indicate two food stalls – Pek Kio Vegetarian Cooked Food in Little India and a chicken rice store in Holland Village – as having agreed to participate.

Local celebrity Pam Oei, a friend of Tan, was behind the latter attempt. Oei bought five plates of chicken rice “in advance”on the stall-owner’s promise that she would “offer them to the poor old people she sees around”.

“Essentially it’s feeding a hungry person who can’t afford a meal,” the 41-year-old actress and comedian told Yahoo! Singapore over the phone.
