Communications intercepts in recent days have indicated that North Korea could be planning a missile launch in the coming days or weeks, a United States official has said, as Pyongyang ramps up its bellicose rhetoric on the US.

Testifying before a parliamentary hearing, South Korean Defence Minister Kim Kwan Jin said he did not know the reasons behind the North’s missile movement, and that it “could be for testing or drills”. He dismissed reports in the Japanese media that the missile could be a KN-08, which is believed to be a long-range missile that, if operable, could hit the US.

North Korea has been issuing a blistering series of similar threats in recent weeks, citing as targets the American military installations in the Pacific islands of Hawaii and Guam, as well as the US mainland.

In its latest threat yesterday, it did not name targets but said it was authorised to “take powerful practical military counteractions” against the threats from B-2 bombers from the US, B-52 bombers from Guam and F-22 stealth jet fighters from Japan that have recently run missions over the Korean Peninsula during joint military exercises with South Korea.
