Married couples without children who have applied for new Housing Board flats for the first time, and are waiting for them to be completed, can apply to rent one of 900 subsidised temporary flats launched yesterday.

HDB said in a statement that it launched the flats under the Parenthood Provisional Housing Scheme, which has been extended to married couples without children.

It previously covered only first-timer married couples with Singaporean children under the age of 16.

The scheme was first introduced in January as part of the Marriage and Parenthood Package, whereby HDB offered 1,150 three- and five-room unfurnished flats in areas like Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Jurong West and Queenstown. Over 200 applications from young families have since been received.

HDB however said yesterday that families with a Singaporean child under the age of 16 will "enjoy priority allocation" under the rental scheme.

The flats under the scheme are primarily vacated Selective En-bloc Revelopment Scheme flats that are not immediately needed for redevelopment. They are unfurnished but retrofitted with basic fittings.

Monthly rentals range from $800 to $1,900, depending on the flat type and location.

A detailed breakdown of the available flat types by location will be made known on the HDB InfoWeb (www.hdb.gov.sg) on April 22.

Those interested should submit their application by April 29.
