Malaysian police are on high alert to track down at least two luxury car thieves who tried to kill a policeman.

Ampang OCPD Asst Comm Amiruddin Jamaluddin said the incident began at 4.30pm on Tuesday when thieves broke into a house in the Ampang area and stole valuables as well as a Toyota Harrier.

The stolen car was found near Jalan Chan Sow Lin in Cheras at 2am the following day. Policemen waited for the thieves to return for the car.

At 11.30am, a black Mercedes-Benz stopped beside the stolen car.

"One man got out and inspected the Harrier. Our men then moved in but the suspect darted back into the Mercedes and sped off but was cornered after hitting four cars parked in the alley.

"The policemen opened fire when the driver reversed into the officers.

"Despite the punctured tyres, the suspects managed to speed off," ACP Amiruddin said yesterday.
