Google is currently negotiating with popular Internet messaging service WhatsApp to buy it for US$1 billion (S$1.24 billion), say reports.
Technology blog Digital Trends reported that Google has been in negotiations to buy WhatsApp for slightly over a month ago, but that WhatsApp is “playing hardball”.
WhatsApp has also been the most widely downloaded communications app for both iOS and Android in recent months, and has been profitable by selling subscriptions to its service for US$1 a year.
WhatsApp is one of many popular messaging services that signalled a dramatic shift in Internet usage in recent years. Facebook itself launched its own Messenger app in 2011 in a bid to capture a slice of the growing market.
