Behold the world's first dedicated self-service machine for dispensing passports - the iCollect!

The jukebox-style device, which was unveiled yesterday, uses facial-recognition technology and contains a robotic arm that grabs the travel documents and dispenses them.

It could eventually be used for the collection of identity cards and long-term passes.

The machine is the latest in a string of innovative measures such as the automated immigration clearance gates introduced in 2006, and online application for passports and registration of identity cards.

Those who want to use it will have to make an appointment on the Internet before picking up their travel documents from one of two kiosks at the Lavender headquarters of the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

They will be identified automatically using their facial features and fingerprints. Existing passports will also be scanned.

The service is not available to first-time passport applicants, those who have lost or damaged their existing biometric passports, and those aged below 16.

5 Simple Steps

1. Apply through the Application for Passport On-line Electronic System on the ICA website. A digital passport photo must be provided. It can be taken with a camera or scanned. Payment is made electronically.

2. Applicants will receive an e-mail telling them to collect their passport. They will also get a pink acknowledgement card through the post within a week, stating the collection date.

3. They then apply for an e-appointment on the ICA website to collect the passport through the iCollect self-service machine at the ICA building.

4. The passport can be collected through the machine in two working days.

5. The device, which uses fingerprint verification and facial-recognition technology, will dispense the travel document within minutes.
