Social work appears to be an attractive career option to more young people, going by the strong enrolment at a local polytechnic.
Over the last three years, Nanyang Polytechnic has seen higher enrolment for its Diploma course in Social Sciences. Students have also gained hands-on experience as social workers through attachments.
Come May, its pioneering batch of 25 diploma holders will graduate as Social Work Associates.
The National Council of Social Service (NCSS) said this is encouraging as more social workers are needed to ease labour demands.
As the social work sector faces manpower shortages and the growing demands of a rapidly ageing population, industry players are hopeful this batch of students and their successors will help ease some of its challenges.
This year, the diploma course will double its initial intake of 25 students to 50.
