Vettel posted the quickest lap of the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend so far with the fastest lap in practice to oust Lewis Hamilton from top spot in his Mercedes with a time of one minute 36.435secs.

On the faster medium Pirelli tyre compound being used at the Sepang International Circuit, Hamilton led the way for the final 20 minutes until triple world champion Vettel claimed top spot.

After snatching his 37th career pole in Melbourne last weekend ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, Vettel and Red Bull appear favourite to again start from the front row of the grid.

But after claiming third around Albert Park, Hamilton suggested he at least could give Vettel a run for his money by finishing 0.133secs down on the 25-year-old German.

Hamilton, however, finished the session by flat-spotting his front-right tyre, which shredded at one point down the back straight and in doing so slightly damaging his front wing.

Surprisingly, Force India suggested they could get two drivers in the top 10 in qualifying as Adrian Sutil and Paul Di Resta were third and sixth quickest in temperatures of 32 degrees centigrade, 0.153secs and 0.372secs adrift respectively.

Sandwiched in between the pair were Mark Webber in his Red Bull and Australian GP winner Kimi Raikkonen, who was quickest on Friday but on Saturday complained of handling with his Lotus.

Behind Di Resta was another surprise in Jenson Button in seventh on the timesheet in his McLaren, the Briton 0.387secs off of Vettel as he finally edged closer to the frontrunners in a car bereft with problems.

The Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso were eighth and 10th either side of Nico Rosberg in his Mercedes.

Although Massa and Rosberg were only half a second behind, Alonso was 0.9secs down as he again found himself trailing his team-mate.

Pastor Maldonado managed to get himself up to 10th and within a second of Vettel in a Williams he described last weekend as "undriveable".
