A man on trial for robbery was shot dead after he attended proceedings at the Ayer Keroh court complex yesterday morning.
S. Saravanan, 39, from Butterworth, was shot in his Honda Accord by two men on a motorcycle at a traffic light junction in Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, about 2km from the court complex.
Saravanan died from gunshot wounds to his neck and shoulder.
His passenger, G. Rajeev, 28, escaped uninjured.
Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Salehhudin Abd Rahman said the incident took place at 10.30am when Saravanan had stopped at the traffic light junction.
"Two men on a motorcycle approached the car from the driver's side and fired several shots through the window and windscreen before speeding off. The victim died at the scene."
"Checks with the Road Transport Department found that the registration number on the car did not match the vehicle's chassis number, which was registered under the victim's name."
Salehhudin urged witnesses to come forward to assist in investigations.
They can contact the Melaka Tengah police headquarters at 06-284 2222, or the nearest police station.
