Two alleged ringleaders of the illegal bus strike have claimed they were beaten up by police in a pair of video clips making the rounds in cyberspace.
Chinese nationals He Jun Ling and Liu Xiangying are seen complaining that they were slapped, punched and threatened while in custody following the Nov 26 protest over pay and living conditions.
The clips, which last for between 60 and 100 seconds, were recorded by independent film-maker Lynn Lee and posted on her website on Monday.
Both men are charged with instigating the walkout by SMRT bus drivers from China - Singapore's first strike in 26 years.
He, who is seen as the chief architect of the illegal protest, claimed he was punched in the stomach while in the police lock-up. The 32-year-old also alleged that he heard officers slapping Liu, 33.
Meanwhile, Liu accused an officer of threatening and hitting him when he denied knowing He.
The police released a statement on Tuesday describing the claims as "serious allegations". They said the former bus drivers should file a police report so their accusations could be investigated.
"Their lawyers can also raise this matter in court when the case against them is heard," the statement added.
He and Liu are among four men accused of leading the 171 drivers from China who took part in the strike on Nov 26 and the 88 who stayed away again the following day. The protest was triggered by unhappiness over living conditions and the pay gap between them and their Malaysian colleagues.
The four are out on bail and have until Feb 1 to decide whether to accept the prosecution's offer of reduced charges if they plead guilty.
