Exclusive Chinese New Year deals like discounts on specific products are being offered at Changi Airport, but there is a catch.

To enjoy "24 exclusive deals from 17 participating outlets", you have to be a China passport holder.

The brochures containing the promotions are located within the transit terminals, behind the departure gates. The promotion, which started on Jan 11, runs until Feb 28.

Participating outlets include popular shops such as Billabong, iStudio, Sunglass Hut and The Cocoa Trees.

This restriction to China passport holders has not gone down well with some.

An American technician, who wanted to known only as Mel, said: "It's the shops' loss if they do not extend the promotion to other nationals."

Extending the promotion to other nationals is simply good business, agreed a staff who works at a shop in the airport.

The man, who declined to be named, said: "Just like how Christmas is such a hot season for shopping, extending this promotion to non-Chinese nationals is only good business.

The promotion also drew angry responses from netizens such as Stomper brown_bess who questioned: "They (Chinese nationals) are the preferred choice?"

When contacted, Mr Robin Goh, assistant vice-president of corporate communications at Changi Airport Group, said they are sorry if the promotion gives the impression that certain nationalities are given preferential treatment.

He said: "We would like to assure our customers that Changi Airport values and respects all our passengers and shoppers, and will strive to ensure that future retail and promotional offerings are inclusive yet relevant to our customers' needs."
