A fire has broken out at Newton MRT station and SCDF has dispatched several fire engines to the scene.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and SMRT is still investigating.
The incident has caused an hour-long disruption along the North-South line with commuters Yahoo! Singapore spoke to reporting 10-minute delays at each station.
A video sent to Yahoo! Singapore by a commuter showed thick smoke inside the station as commuters were told to exit the station.
Commuter Victor Tan, who was on a train heading towards the North at around 8.50 am said the train he was on was stuck at Newton MRT for several minutes before an announcement was made that it would be delayed.
He noticed smoke starting to spread from the first cabin and passengers began evacuation from the train in an orderly manner. He said there was no mention of the fire until commuters started question the station master.
The source of the fire seems to be contained within the MRT tunnel as shops at Newton station itself continue to remain open. A 7-11 outlet shopkeeper told Yahoo she did not see or smell anything unusual.
More updates to follow.
