Australian football club Perth Glory has named Alistair Edwards, Singapore’s former Malaysia Cup hero in the early ’90s, as their interim coach for the rest of the season after firing Ian Ferguson from the post.
Perth owner Tony Sage announced the decision yesterday after his team’s 2-0 loss to Melbourne Heart extended their winless stretch to eight matches. Perth are bottom in the 10-team league with only five wins and a draw in 20 rounds.
Only the top six teams qualify for the playoffs and Perth are five points adrift of sixth-placed Sydney FC.
Edwards, coach of Australia’s under-17 side, was given special permission by Football Federation Australia to leave his post.
The 44-year-old former Australian international played for Singapore in the 1990 and 1993 Malaysian Super League and Malaysia Cup.
