The tree was embedded in the car.

That was how civil servant Jack Chua, 44, described the state of the car after the horrific accident on Boon Lay Way at 10.30pm onThursday.

The driver of the white Kia Forte, Mr Cheng Heng Siang, was killed on the spot after his car went off the road and crashed into a tree at high speed.

The 30-year-old IT analyst was trapped between the car's steering wheel and his seat.

Mr Chua said: "It was about 10.30pm when I heard something like a loud explosion. I was in the bedroom with my eldest son and he asked me if it was an explosion."

"SCDF officers were trying to cut open the wreckage using special tools."

"They removed the roof of the car first. After that, they used some equipment to pull apart a part of the car near the front door. The metal wasall crumpled."

"Some officers also climbed to the back of the car because the driver looked squashed in between the metal."

An SCDF spokesman said the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was extricated in 20 minutes by SCDF officers with two spreader cutters and a hydraulic pump.

It sent one ambulance, one fire engine, two fire bikes and three supporting vehicles to the scene.

The police said it received a call at 10.26pm on Thursday.

Investigations are ongoing.

Lianhe Wanbao reported that he had returned home from work and was on his way out when the accident happened.

Mr Cheng's mother told the evening daily: "After he got home, he took the keys and rushed out of the house. We didn't even know where he went."

When police officers went to the flat bearing the bad news later that night, she and her husband thought their youngest child was sleeping.
