Whew...
LIONSXII and Kelantan, the top two in the Malaysia Super League last season, both got the 2013 campaign off to a winning start on Wednesday evening.

LIONSXII, who were runners-up last term, headed into their clash against ATM at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium regarded by many as underdogs given the number of young players that were introduced to the squad in the off-season.

However, in a gritty display that was reminiscent of their performances in 2012, V. Sundramoorthy's men picked up all three points with a 1-0 win over an Armed Forces side many expect to challenge for the title.

Captain Shahril Ishak scored the only goal of the game in the 67th minute when he swept home a loose ball from close range, after Farizal Harun could only parry a snapshot by Shakir Hamzah back into the danger zone.

In the end, ATM were left to rue their inability to put away their chances, especially in the first half when LIONSXII goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud made a series of fine save to deny Shukor Adan and Marlon Alex James, while the latter was also guilty of missing a number of gilt-edged opportunities throughout the 90 minutes.

Over at the Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium, defending champions Kelantan required an last-gasp strike to see off PKNS FC with a 2-1 victory.

It was the visitors who edged ahead in the 15th minute, when Helmi Remeli curled home an exquisite left-footed freekick just outside the area that had Khairul Fahmi beaten all ends up.

Nonetheless, it took the Red Warriors just four minutes to equalise after some calamitous defending from PKNS allowed Haris Safwan to pick up the ball on the edge of the area and send a looping shot back off the bar, where Badhri Radzi proceeded to smash home the rebound.

But try as they might, Kelantan just failed to find the crucial second goal until right at the death, when Zairul Fitree Ishak met an Indra Putra Mahayuddin freekick with a flick-on header that made its way into the back of the net, handing his side a vital three points.
