A man in his 60s died after a rescue team took more than 30 minutes to arrive at his Yokohama home because it initially went to the wrong house, it has been learned.
According to the Yokohama City Fire Bureau, the man called 119 on Dec. 17, saying, "There is something wrong with my heart." When a caller telephones on a fixed line, a computer at the bureau's operation centre automatically displays the name of the head of the household and its address.
However, the operator gave the rescue team the address of a different person with the same family name as the caller, who lives in a house two doors away from his. The team arrived at the wrong house six minutes later. As the door on the first floor was locked, the team entered the house from a window on the second floor.
However, no one was home. The team tried calling the number of the caller, but the telephone in the house they had mistakenly entered did not ring. After the team finally discovered the mistake, it rushed to the house of the caller. It had been 36 minutes since the centre received the emergency call. When the team entered the house, the man was lying on the floor.
