Instagram released an updated version of its privacy policy and terms of service yesterday, and they include lengthy stipulations on how photographs uploaded by users may be used by Instagram and its parent company, Facebook.

The changes, which will go into effect Jan 16, will not apply to pictures shared before that date.

Facebook and Instagram have both hinted at plans to incorporate advertisements into Instagram's application.

Firstly, Instagram can now share information about its users with Facebook, its parent company, as well as outside affiliates and advertisers. Instagram said that the changes to its privacy policy are a means to help Instagram "function more easily as part of Facebook.

Users could also star in an advertisement - without their knowledge. A section of the new terms of service, titled "Rights", notes that Instagram will also be able to use users' photographs and identity in advertisements.

Underage users are also not exempt from the changes.

Users who want to opt out can only do so by deleting their account and not use the service.
